The sheet metal production industry is under ever-increasing pressure to deliver fast turnaround times. One of the most effective ways of achieving this is by shortening the production cycle. At the same time, it's essential to maintain the high quality of the output, as my past work has demonstrated. Lean Principles in Sheet Metal Production In my first article, I covered some of the basics of lean manufacturing for people who may not be familiar with them. In this second part, I want to take a more in-depth look at the appearance of lean principles in the sheet metal production industry and what that means for our audience of industry insiders who work in fabrication.
Sheet metal production moves quickly if design optimization and preliminary planning are done well. This relies on providing information during the phase when a product is being designed that can simplify component designs and help the designer make better decisions concerning the use of material specifications and thicknesses. ... Computer Aided Design (CAD) combined with Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) makes it possible to move from design to production without any human error in the transition process. In addition to maintaining the flow of production, this also cuts down on the time needed to throw a product together once the designs are completed. ... Design decisions that facilitate rapid sheet metal production have consequences all the way through, not just for manufacturing, but also for the use of the product and its eventual recycling.
Effective interdepartmental communication and collaboration are essential for the coordination of the design, procurement, production, and logistics teams. Elsewhere in this report, I have discussed the importance of the supply chain and its robust relationships with suppliers. An equally important—and often neglected—aspect of the supply chain is the communication among the various teams. Quietly and without fanfare, a pathway of cooperation can lead to synchronized, well-timed efforts that result in no late deliveries and a consistently lean inventory.
